Call for Solo Piano and Multimedia

GAUDEAMUS offers young composers a unique opportunity to create music for London-based pianist, composer and technologist, Zubin Kanga.

Zubin Kanga by Raphaël Neal

Gaudeamus and Zubin Kanga invite young composers to develop a new work for piano and multimedia of around 7-10 minutes’ duration. The work could combine the piano with a combination of electronics (fixed and/or live), video, sensors, synthesizers and auxiliary instruments and controllers. The work will explore new ways of combining a solo pianist with new technologies, and will be included as part of Zubin Kanga’s UK-based music-technology research project, Cyborg Soloists.

Instruments and software used in the work should either be easily available, or supplied by the composer. The composer will communicate with Zubin Kanga (via email and Zoom meetings) during the development of the work, collaboratively exploring the approach to the piano and the new technologies. The work will be premiered at Gaudeamus Festival 2024.

The end result can be a fully notated score, but other processes (like an open score, workshopping material, etc.) are possible. Composers with a background outside of traditionally composed / classical music are very much encouraged to participate.

Deadline for this call is 1 Augustus. The first 40 proposals will be viewed. Composers younger than 35 by September 2024 living or studying in The Netherlands can participate. Students selected will receive a stipend; alumni will receive a commission fee.

How can I participate?

Send in your motivation letter (max. 1 page) answering the following questions

  • Why do you want to work with Zubin Kanga?
  • What is the concept for your piece?
  • How would your work develop new approaches to combining the piano with multimedia and other technologies? Which technologies will be the focus?
  • Please list the expected technical requirements for a performance of the work.

Please also send a short biography (max 200 words) and a maximum of 2 recent compositions (as sound or video files or a link to a webpage (YouTube, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, etc)). Scores and programme notes can also be included, but are not compulsory.
