Louis Andriessen’s De Staat (‘The Republic’) is one of the most important Dutch compositions of the 20th century – there is even a rock band named after it – but it is not often heard live because of its sizeable instrumentation. With the strongly socially critical De Staat, Andriessen brought minimal music to the Netherlands but gave it a completely individual twist in the process. Experience this Dutch classic as it should be – live and loud!
Before the concert, writer Pelumi Adejumo reads an essay on the role of music and art in society.
