Behind the W.A.L.L – Dries Alkemade & Aart Strootman / final event

This concert has already taken place. Click here for our current concert programme.

Composer, guitarist and instrument builder Aart Strootman won the Gaudeamus Award in 2017 and presented his ambitious performance W.A.L.L in 2019. For this piece he designed an impressive 21m² marimba, which he himself built. His good friend, filmmaker and actor Dries Alkemade followed Strootman during the production process like a “fly on the wall”. At the end of the 75th anniversary edition of the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, the resulting documentary will premiere in TivoliVredenburg – including a Q&A with Strootman and Alkemade – and simultaneously online. And a real world premiere: brand new music by Strootman for the marimba in an entirely new shape, played by the two percussionists of xSight@ Percussion duo: Iconoclasm.

The documentary offers a unique insight into the collaborative process between the composer and the musicians, filmed from the personal perspective of someone who, though not a contemporary music practice insider, does have a great fascination with this field, and in particular how his friend relates to it.

This viewing can be visited live by a select audience in TivoliVredenburg. Buy your ticket by clicking on the right side. The documentary will also be streamed live online. When you watch, you can make a donation according to a pay-as-you-like principle. For more information, check the tickets & info page.
