Composer, guitarist and instrument builder Aart Strootman won the Gaudeamus Award in 2017 and presented his ambitious performance W.A.L.L in 2019. For this piece he designed an impressive 21m² marimba, which he himself built. His good friend, filmmaker and actor Dries Alkemade followed Strootman during the production process like a “fly on the wall”. At the end of the 75th anniversary edition of the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, the resulting documentary will premiere in TivoliVredenburg – including a Q&A with Strootman and Alkemade – and simultaneously online. And a real world premiere: brand new music by Strootman for the marimba in an entirely new shape, played by the two percussionists of xSight@ Percussion duo: Iconoclasm.
The documentary offers a unique insight into the collaborative process between the composer and the musicians, filmed from the personal perspective of someone who, though not a contemporary music practice insider, does have a great fascination with this field, and in particular how his friend relates to it.
