The Catching Cultures Orchestra connects people by means of music. Musicians who have had to flee their own country enter into musical dialogue with each other and with Dutch musicians during jam sessions, workshops and festivals in Utrecht neighbourhoods and refuge centres. During the past eighteen months Gaudeamus has asked three young composers to write work especially for this borderless orchestra.
Three young composers have been supervised in writing a piece for the orchestra: Syrian-Palestinian ney player Hamed Alshaabi, recent conservatory alumnus and percussionist Channe Visscher (both also orchestra members) and Spanish composer Alberto Granados Reguilón. Their own cultural backgrounds and the unique instrumentation of the orchestra come together in beautiful compositions that transcend borders.
