Zamenhof Project: Breaking the Codes by young music theatre maker Jerzy Bielski is inspired by the ideas and the life of Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of the universal language Esperanto and promoter of world peace. In addition to the premiere on Thursday 5 September in Het Huis Utrecht, the performance will also be held on Sunday 8 September in Kelmis. Kelmis is a small village that in the early 20th century used to be part of Moresnet, a tiny neutral country in Limburg, bordering Belgium, where for a while Esperanto was spoken as the main language. Gaudeamus is organizing an all-inclusive bus journey to see Breaking the Codes: Zamenhof Project in Kelmis. On the way you can learn everything about Esperanto and the fascinating history of Moresnet.
The adventure starts at noon when we will take the bus to this intriguing region. On the way, you can follow a beginner’s course in Esperanto. As soon as we arrive in Kelmis, a museum visit is organized in the Vieille Montagne museum where you will dive into the special past of Moresnet and the world of Esperanto and zinc, followed by a tour through the village. At 16:30, Jerzy Bielski’s interdisciplinary project will be performed in Kulturzentrum Select, accompanied by interactive installations. Following these enriching experiences, dinner takes place in Kelmis before hitting the road back to Utrecht.
