Vica Pacheco – Mitote
Thu 7 to Sun 10 September 10:00 – 17:00 in Museum Speelklok
For the entire duration of Gaudeamus Festival 2023 you can view the kinetic sculpture Mitote by the Mexican artist Vica Pacheco in Museum Speelklok. This museum for self-playing musical instruments is a long-standing partner of Gaudeamus Festival. The installation can also be seen after the festival up to and including 3 November. If you show a Gaudeamus Festival wrist strap at the museum box office, you will receive a 25% discount on an entrance ticket to the museum
A collection of ceramic hydraulic flutes which Pacheco produced at the EKWC in Oisterwijk, the Netherlands, forms the basis for this kinetic installation. ‘Mitote’ is a term from contemporary Mexican popular culture used to define a riot or a party. In earlier times the term was associated with a Mayan creation myth. In Mitote the artist conceives a kinetic sculpture which she refers to as the Bionic Mangrove, where zoomorphic creatures emit their songs thanks to the energy of the components of this tree.
Mitote was commissioned by iii in collaboration with Rewire, Amare, Overtoon, STUK and iMal.
Kate Moore – A Beautiful Path
Thu 7 to Sun 10 september 12:00 – 17:00 in Movement Exposed Gallery Space
Sought after composer Kate Moore has come to know studios and concert halls like the back of her hand. For her new project A Beautiful Path she sets off into the wider world. Walking from Oss westwards to the Irish island of Skellig Michael, in stages spread over a year between August 2023 and September 2024, she will compose en plein air. She will kick off the project with an exhibition at the Movement Exposed Gallery Space.
Countless composers drew inspiration for their music from nature. Painters like Vincent van Gogh even created their artworks standing in the landscape that inspired them, braving wind and weather. Like a contemporary troubadour, Moore now allows her new music to emerge directly, in nature. On the Thursday of the Gaudeamus Festival, she will open the exhibition with a performative presentation, which will then be on view in Movement Exposed Gallery Space.
This project is supported by Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst.
