Gaudeamus 75: NTR Zaterdagmatinee

This concert has already taken place. Click here for our current concert programme.

Gaudeamus is 75 years old this year. We celebrate that during the Gaudeamus Music Week, but also in various concerts throughout the country with brand new commissioned works by composers who have a close relationship with Gaudeamus.

In three-quarter of a century, Gaudeamus grew into a global institute. Numerous internationally renowned composers won the Gaudeamus Award: from our own Louis Andriessen to the Korean Unsuk Chin. From the American Pauline Oliveros to the Cypriot-Dutch Yannis Kyriakides.

Commissioned for the jubilating festival, Kyriakides is writing a new piece for orchestra, four voices and electronics. At the time of writing, he is in the middle of the sketching phase. “The beginning of a composition is always a highly volatile process,” he says. “I often start working out several ideas, until I see which one has the most potential.” Kyriakides has just referred a first idea to get started with samples from the rich Gaudeamus archive to the trash: “Time for plan B.”
