Gaudeamus Sessies #23

This concert has already taken place. Click here for our current concert programme.

During our irregular Sessions, Gaudeamus (the platform for young music pioneers’ development) presents previews, try-outs and work-in-progress sessions of its own productions, young ensembles and/or talented composers. In Sessies #23 brand new work of Gagi Petrovic & Trash Panda Collective, Merel Vercammen and Maya Fridman.

Composer Gagi Petrovic is not a stranger for Gaudeamus. Three years ago he wrote the strong piece Ob-literate with Zeno van den Broek, commissioned by Gaudeamus, that was released last autumn by record label Unsounds. Petrovic has started a new collaboration with the energetic Trash Panda Collective. He writes a new piece for the Collective in stages. On this night, he presents the first drafts and fragments of the collaboration.

Our musician in residence Maya Fridman plays pieces for cello and voice. Including the Dutch premiere of Reið-Hagall-Bjarkan by the Canadian/Icelandic composer and cellist Fjóla Evans, who is temporarily living in Amsterdam and whose pieces were earlier played during the Bang on a Can Marathon in New York. One of the founders of Bang on a Can, David Lang, is featured in the programme too with his piece Heroin. A very special adaption of the eponymous song of The Velvet Underground, that almost sounds like a slow Cello Suite by Bach.

Violinist Merel Vercammen loves improvising. In a style she describes as “free classical” she looks for improvisations in a classical style. Inspired by a rich organ tradition that leaves much room for improvisation, she creates music in the moment. Next summer she will release an album with her improvisations on TRPTK, on which she plays with Bernadeta Astari, Ties Mellema, Rembrand Frerichs and others. In this session she will play with Maya Fridman and Bernadeta Astari.
