In this edition of Synthese you will experience the sounds of resonance in an acoustic landscape. In LE:EN, Helena Basilova performs the piano work Triadic Memories by Morton Feldman. This American composer is known for his meditative and tranquil compositions, in which the perception of time changes, and he lets go of the classical form. Feldman regarded the piece as a spatial landscape in which you move ariybd. And thereby raises the question of whether the landscape has a beginning or an end. Ambient composer Gigi Masin also plays with the perception of time: the resonant melodies in his Vahinè transport you to a Venetian dream world. The emotional mini-album he performs was written as a tribute to his recently deceased wife.
Helena Basilova
Pianist Helena Basilova is constantly looking for the connection between the old and the new in her work. She believes it is important to expand the reach and bandwidth of contemporary classical music, and is therefore always looking for new ways and locations to bring her music to life. During her studies in New York she developed a deep bond with the tranquil and disruptive music of American composers John Cage and Morton Feldman. Feldman rose to prominence in the 1950s. His music is abstract and influenced by expressionism. In his early work he used a new technique in which the notes and rests are not indicated exactly; it is left to the musician how long they are kept.
Gigi Masin
Composer and ambient producer Gigi Masin made his debut in 1986 with Wind. This album gained cult status within the underground because it was often played on the radio at night. In the Netherlands, Gigi became known mainly for his collaboration with Young Marco as Gaussian Curve, and the re-release of his earlier work on the Amsterdam label Music From Memory. He performs the mini-album Vahiné, an emotional tribute to his recently deceased wife.
