Netelland at Fort Maarsseveen is an interactive performance in the form of a mini-festival, in which visitors enter a vision of the future of 2169. By then, Fort Maarsseveen will have become an island, on which a community lives in harmony with each other, the fort and nature, with the nettle playing a central role. During an ongoing programme of performances, stories, conversations and rituals by a large number of artists and performers, visitors form their own stories of what could have happened between 2025 and 2169.
Netelland is an initiative of Dutch composer Eva Beunk and Austrian installation artist Adrian Gutzelnig. During a continuous, organic three-hour program, performed two times in succession and accessible at any time, the Utrecht aan Zeemanskoor sing future sailor shanties and Lamin Kuyateh performs traditional Gambian songs. There’s a continuous ceramics workshop by Gerry Verkerk and Annelies Koster, and Leon Herweg tells stories. Every three hours, the public must help replenish the island’s water supply, or you can take a sound bath with the help of Sofie de Klerk. And if you’re feeling hungry or thirsty, Pop-Up Paella serves tapas, and free nettle tea is available all day long!
PAY ATTENTION: The entrance for this performance is through the parking lot at Maarsseveensevaart 11 – How to get there?.
Only wheelchair users are allowed through the main entrance.
ATTENTION: We’ve made sure the event can be enjoyed in all weather conditions, with cozy tents and small but welcoming indoor areas available throughout the weekend. As true Netellanders, we embrace the elements and find beauty in being connected with nature, rain or shine. Of course it helps if you dress for the elements. The experience will be just as inspiring whatever the weather brings.
Eva Beunk’s compositions are a commission of Gaudeamus Festival and are made possible by financial support from the Performing Arts Fund.
