What do we talk about when we talk about generations? Gen-z, millennials, boomers have become very popular terms nowadays. But what is it that distinguishes a generation from another? In response to their unique experiences, historicities, geopolitical and cultural contexts, the younger generations often define themselves in relation to their predecessors. Rebelling against them, connecting to their distant ancestry or following long lines of traditions, young musicians also create their own generation’s identity. So, in this seminar, we will follow the historical rotation of generations through musical practices and question: How does a generation define itself?
