Peni Candra Rini, “one of the world’s greatest singers” according to the members of the Kronos Quartet, is a Javanese singer, composer, and faculty member at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. She is a master of several traditional forms and is regarded as one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers, one of only a handful of female composers in Indonesia.

As the final concert of Gaudeamus Festival 2025, Peni Candra Rini presents Rara – Allegories of the Southern Sea, a theatrical production including video and live shadow theater about the mythology of East Java. Prior to the concert the Gaudeamus Award will be given to one of the four nominees!

Gaudeamus Academy: Peni Candra Rini will be a guest lecturer leading masterclasses on Tuesday September 9th, and Wednesday September 10th, for HKU students of Music & Technology and Utrecht Conservatory, respectively. The main topics will be tradition vs. innovation, and hands-on experience with the gamelan.
