A common thread throughout the Gaudeamus Festival is the Gaudeamus Award: the prestigious incentive prize that we have been presenting annually to a young composer since 1956. Four composers have been nominated for the Award this year. Their music, including brand-new works written especially for this occasion, resonates throughout the festival; one of the composers will be awarded the prize at the end of the week.
The American Mivos Quartet will perform a new piece by Chilean nominee Anibal Vida this evening. They will also perform an existing work by the Brazilian Rodrigo Pascale. Since 2008, Mivos has been committed to bringing the work of contemporary composers to the forefront and showcasing a diverse musical palette to audiences from all over the world, in recent years through intensive collaborations with composers such as Steve Reich and musicians like Ambrose Akinmusire.
