Machine Langue

This concert has already taken place. Click here for our current concert programme.

Throughout the opening evening, you can experience the installation Machine Langue in The Pit at TivoliVredenburg: a collaboration between composer Zara Ali, nominated for the Gaudeamus Award 2023, and visual artist Aanvik Singh.

Machine Langue takes its name from the concept of ‘langue’ as posited by Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure: a so-called interoceptive language, i.e. one that works through stimuli in one’s own body, as opposed to language used to communicate with others (‘parole’). Singh and Ali imagine the consciousness of a machine ‘experiencing’ its own calculations, and try to represent that experience without humanizing it, as an anthropologist would do.
