Resisting Waters

The Netherlands is an international leader in water management and possesses a wealth of knowledge on how to protect against water and floods. At the same time, water cannot always be controlled. And the high-tech solutions devised to hold back water also raise critical questions: for whom are these solutions accessible? Which perspectives are lost, and what does that mean for the personal relationships people have with water? In the exhibition Resisting Waters, playful, challenging, and sometimes confrontational installations show how water sometimes leads a life of its own. Together with water experts, we demonstrate how water possesses unique, unexpected, and inimitable qualities.

Resisting Waters reflects on the social, political, and spiritual aspects of water infrastructure in a four-day programme featuring sound installations, performances, and in-depth exploration, including work by Caro de Valk, Mariko Hori, Nischal Khadka & Merel Maan Galama.

The exhibition is part of the Gaudeamus Festival, the premier festival in Utrecht for groundbreaking and interdisciplinary makers whose work is based on sound, and is presented in close collaboration with Residenties in Utrecht, the Instituto Cervantes, the University Museum Utrecht, and researchers from Utrecht University and research centre KWR Water Research Institute.

The exhibition is made possible by Rabobank Stimuleringsfonds and Elise Mathilde Fonds, and part of the Ulysses Platform, co-funded by the European Union.
