We are familiar with string quartets and wind quartets, but what about bagpipe quartets? The Northern French bagpipe innovator Erwan Keravec took up the challenge and put together a band with the four different types of bagpipes used in Breton traditional music: the exceptionally loud bombarde, the high and shrill binioù kozh, the Scottish bagpipe and the trelombard. The pure, physical power and richness of drones and sounds that a band like this can produce make it a veritable playground for adventurous composers, four of whom took up the challenge. One of them is Jessica Ekomane, who will play on the Friday night of Gaudeamus 2022. That same night also features an arrangement of Philip Glass’s classic Music in Similar Motion, which is guaranteed to be spectacular.
