re: De Staat (expo)

Louis Andriessen wrote De Staat (“The Republic”) as a reflection on the relationship between music and politics. “Many composers see their work as being somehow above social influences,” he wrote, but he himself found that, “the techniques you use and the kind of instruments you write for are largely determined by your own social background and listening experience, and the availability of financial support.” In response to this, Gaudeamus, Musica Festival (Strasbourg) and Muziekgebouw are inviting twelve very artistically diverse European composers to write text-based scores on this theme. The scores will be shown to the public in an exhibition and some will be performed by musicians from Asko|Schönberg.
